Jim Lee and Scott Williams were at the top of their game when X-MEN #1 VOL. They were pushing the envelope of detail, emotion and composition in superhero comics and X-MEN #1 not only delivered, but went all out on the extras as well. Readers were treated to bonus spreads and pinups and the most well-known of all is likely the (in)famous pool party. In just two pages Lee and Williams manage to fully capture the nuance and depth of the more human side of Marvel’s mutants. Proof once again that the soap opera side of the team is often the part that sticks with readers the most long after the dust of battle has cleared.
